My husband and I went to see New Moon last night.  He really doesn't like the movies, but knows that I want to see them, and he doesn't want me to have to go alone.  So he usually makes fun of them on the way home.  This time we were talking about the sparkling effect and how....well, lame, the whole sparkling thing is.  I was telling him that way back when I read the first book, and Edward mentions that even though they can physically go in the sun, they still don't let people see them, I thought that the sunlight maybe made their skin translucent and you could see through the skin and see veins and stuff , making them rather grotesque looking.

So my question for you is...

What did you think was the reason for the Cullens (and all vampires I suppose) to not let anyone see them in the sunlight?

ETA:  I thought I was clear, but aparently not.  Some people got the question, some didnt.  What I am asking is In the amount of time in the book that we did NOT KNOW why they couldnt go out in the sunlight (but we knew there was a reason), what DID YOU THINK was the reason?
